Examples of Sky Sights You Might See on This Cruise
(Bring Binoculars)   Binoculars
Orion
Star Gaze Early: Early evening skies display Orion and the brilliant stars of winter in the western sky. See sky's brightest star (Sirius) and the "Belt of Orion".
Milky Way
Star Gaze Late: Rise early and see the brilliant Southern Milky Way. Photo actually taken from deck of Holland America's Volendam! (Indonesia Eclipse Cruise: 2016 March)
Sunrise
Sunrise: Watch for beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Clouds can add drama but hope none appear on eclipse day! But be careful not to look directly at the Sun without safe solar filters such as those we will provide. (Sunrise, Indonesia Eclipse Cruise: 2016 March)
Green Flash
Green Flash: Look for elusive "green flash" when Sun almost entirely below horizon, with barest upper edge of sun still visible. Opportunities best if viewing over ocean. You just might see it! For a second or two, upper rim of sun can sometimes appear green. Photo from deck of ms Paul Gauguin (South Pacific Eclipse Cruise: 2005 April 7)
Belt of Venus
Belt of Venus & Twilight Edge: Just after sunset look eastward opposite from Sun (antisolar point). You might see a pinkish horizon glow or arch ("Belt of Venus" or "Venus's Girdle") extending roughly 10–20° upward. As twilight progresses, the dark band of the Earth's shadow ("twilight wedge" or "dark segment") appears below. Named for girdle allegedly worn by Greek goddess Aphrodite (Roman goddess Venus), possibly similar to this pinkish arch. (Above picture taken 9 minutes after sunset.)
Evening Sky Map
Evening Sky Map: The evening sky at about 8:00 p.m. local time for early April 2024 from near Mazatlán, Mexico. South is at bottom, east on left. Bring a sky map like this to help you identify constellations and stars. Latitudes during cruise will vary from approximately 33° (San Diego) to 16° (Huatulco). See Itinerary Map. (Sky Map produced with Cartes du Ciel software, a free and open source planetarium program.)

Download a printable sky chart for early April evenings.
